July 9 - 7th Annual Western Outdoor News Shootout

This is the seventh year of the event and WON is proud to claim this as the largest one day sport boat tournament in the world! World? We challenge you to find one larger.

This year’s Shootout has the Mirage, Aloha Spirit, Pacific Islander, Erna B,Sea Biscuit and the Cobra competing against one another. “It’s really a lot of fun on the sportboats, the guys take it serious, sure, but it’s pretty lighthearted, with cash payouts and impressive prize packs thrown in,” says Tournament Director Ben Babbitt.

The ticket cost is only $85 for the trips on some of Ventura County’s best sport boats. “It’s a full day trip, and cheaper than the usual $100 that it costs to go on the 5 a.m. full day out of Channel Islands Sportfishing Center,” adds Babbitt. “Toss in the goodies like Tady Lures, Trokar hooks, Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon, Sufix line fills on the boat and all the other goods, and it’s like a freeroll.”

For more details on the event, call Tournament Director Ben Babbitt at (949) 366-0726

Perfect opportunity to introduce someone new to the sport!

Free Fishing days for 2015 are July 4 and September 5

Have you ever felt the excitement of watching your bobber suddenly jiggle, then dive out of sight? Or feeling the tap-tap-tap of a bass as it tastes the worm on the end of your line? Or having a salmon practically tear the rod out of your hands as it smashes your lure? What's that? You say you never learned to fish?

If you are new to the sport of fishing, and not sure if you will enjoy it, a great opportunity awaits you. CDFW offers two Free Fishing Days each year. On these days, you can fish without a sport fishing license. Free Fishing Days provide a great, low-cost way to give fishing a try. Some CDFW Regions offer a Fishing in the City program where you can go fishing in the middle of major metropolitan areas perhaps just a few blocks from your home. Fishing in the City and free fishing day clinics are designed to educate novice anglers about fishing ethics, fish habits, effective methods for catching fish, and fishing tackle. You can even learn how to clean and prepare your catch so you can enjoy it for dinner that night.

While all fishing regulations, such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closures remain in effect, there are two days each year when anyone can fish without purchasing a fishing license.

On Free Fishing Days, every angler must have the appropriate report card if they are fishing for (if applicable):

  • abalone
  • steelhead
  • sturgeon
  • spiny lobster
  • or salmon in the Smith and Klamath-Trinity River Systems.

What about them...

White sea bass are identified from other croakers by their ridge along the belly, are blue-gray with dark speckling above and silvery below though juveniles have vertical dark bars. A white seabass sized at 28 inches in length or above is an appropriate catch although there are records of 5 feet/ 90 pounds white seabass, anything over 60 pounds is exceptional.  They feed off a variation of squid, pacific sardine, northern anchovy, pelagic red crab yet within some previously caught larger white sea bass pacific mackerel seemed to have been their favorite meal.  By the way 28 inches happens to be the CA size limit; be sure to check the fishing regulations for bag limits.

Invertebrates of Interest: California Spiny Lobster

California's coastal waters are home to a multitude of invertebrates (species lacking a bony skeleton). A small fraction of these, including California spiny lobster, are actually targeted by California's recreational and commercial fisheries.

Rockfish Season Opens! March 1st, 2015

Sheepshead fish

Smile! It’s rockfish season! Get ready for a full day of rockfish as spring anglers prepare for our annual rockfish opener on March 1st, 2015. If you crave the smell of the salty air and the invigorating thrill of deep sea fishing, you’ll love our annual event on March 1st. All 13 of our Channel Island Sportfishing vessels will depart from Channel Islands Harbor to take to the Northern Channel Islands along the California coast. We will be fishing for lingcod, rock cod, sheepshead, and whitefish.

Channel Islands Sportfishing Center of Oxnard offers fishing charters for all ages and levels of anglers. We even offer vessels for impromptu fishing trips. Channel Islands Sportfishing of Oxnard has the capacity to take 400 anglers daily. However, for the opening day of rockfish season, you’ll want to  book your trip in advance as many of our vessels will sell out. Visit our website for fleet details, trip times, and recent fish counts.

Ling Cod

Ling Cod

One of the fish we’ll be after on opening day will be lingcod. Lingcod are only found off the west coast from Alaska to Baja, and are one of the Pacific Coast’s most prized species. Perhaps this is because catching the elusive creatures can be a challenge for even the most experienced angler. They are solitary fish known to be ambush predators consuming fish equal to their own size. They have been known for plunging to the deep, hauling even the toughest anglers to the rail. Lingcod dwell on rocky reefs and ocean bottoms, and because of their solitary nature, encountering a lingcod takes knowledge and skill. Join our knowledgeable captains on the opening day of rockfish season to wage your skills against the “dragon of the deep”.

On opening day, there’s no doubt that the harbor will be buzzing with hundreds of anxious anglers ready to take to the deep sea. One way to prepare for the event is to purchase your fishing license in advance. You can do that easily through our website. Other conveniences Channel Islands Sportfishing of Oxnard offers include vessel galleys, our own live bait operation, free parking, rod rentals, and a fully stocked tackle shop.

We’re looking forward to this year’s rock fishing opening day event, and we hope to see you there!

Sport fishing; Organic Corporate Team Building Events that Last

by Channel Islands Sportfishing

Staff
November 22nd, 2013

Today’s employers realize that there is tremendous value in events that increase the moral and unity of their team. Team spirit is directly related to better employee retention, improved recruitment, and increased productivity. That’s what makes corporate team building events so valuable. However, not every type of corporate team building  event is right for every company. Many companies shy away from the highly structured programs presented by professional team builders and opt for fun events that build camaraderie and team unity organically.

What is an Organic Team Building Event?

Not every one wants a week of camping in the woods, speeches and trust exercises, but that does not mean that they need to count themselves out of the game when it comes to building team spirit with purpose. Organic corporate teambuilding events are ones that set the stage for excitement, teamwork, camaraderie, and lasting memories without the structured programs, such as sporting events.

Why Organic Team Building Events Work

There are some great reasons why organic corporate team building events work so well, and in many cases better than their structured counterpart.

  • Employees see them as a reward
  • Participants are more inclined to be relaxed
  • Relationships are grown and improved naturally
  • Participants are looking to build a memory, rather than “get through” an event
  • Removes everyone from the work environment
  • Allows everyone to see co-workers in a new light
  • Participants naturally draw parallels from nature and apply it to their lives

Sport Fishing the Channel Islands—Team Building at its Best

For those that want the thrill of a team building event, but not the corporate stuffiness, a sport fishing event in the Channel Islands fits the bill. Sport fishing is one of the few events that truly take employees away from it all in a stress free and exhilarating environment. Corporations can rent more than one boat, divide into teams, and hold a company tournament. In addition to providing the thrill of a lifetime, sport fishing sets the stage for teamwork, relationship building, bragging rights over catching “the Big One”, and of course, stories of the “the one that got away”. Our Fleet.

One of the most important reasons why sport fishing is a top choice in building unity is that it is an experience that can never be duplicated, and shared by only those who attend. It is that shared spirit of adventure that every company tries to achieve because that is what fuels success.

4th Annual Fish4Food Charity Event Is A Success!

On March 19, 2013, Channel Island Sportfishing, along with Fish4Food founder Jerry Stussman, Gold Coast Lady Anglers and Ventura County Food Share, held the 4th Annual Fish4Food Charity Event.

Approximately 300 anglers left the dock on 10 Sportboats out of Channel Islands Sportfishing landing. The weather looked to be good! The day was spent fishing out at our local islands amongst a great atmosphere of anticipation of which boat was going to catch the most fish to donate. Good times were had by all!

"Thank you so very much for helping to make the 4th Annual Fish4Food event such a success. I had a great time out on the ocean (other than getting a bad sunburn...whoops!) and loved the energy of the entire day. I had to run out to class at about 3:30PM but it was great to see how many people stuck around for the lunch and raffle afterward fishing all day. I have attached the total weight sheet for each boat and the total lbs. collected - 550 lbs. of fish is simply amazing."
