Surface and Yellowtail fishing at the Channel Islands

by Channel Islands Sportfishing Staff

Yellowtail fishing on the Gentleman

The surface bite is still going strong at the Channel Islands.

We are still catching big numbers of Yellowtail fishing the local islands, Anacapa or Santa Cruz. The sea lions are reported making fishing difficult and on some days completely shutting the bite off. If they are not taking your bait, they are stealing your fish. Anacapa was un-fishable this past Friday because of seals according to several of the captains. Still, despite the army of pinniped, we are landing outstanding numbers of fish. The Yellows are also starting to get bigger. Many anglers coming out ready for Yellowtail in the 10-20 pound class are getting rocked by our "Home Guard" Yellows. These fish are upwards of 40+ pounds and will test even the most seasoned angler with heavy gear. Still, we are catching mostly smaller Yellowtail, more than manageable on 25 pound gear.

Yellowtail fishing on the Seabiscuit

Best Calico bass fishing in years continues.

Besides game fish, we are still having one of the best Calico Bass years in recent memory. Barracuda are still hanging around and the Halibut bite is also picking up. The season is still rolling strong with no sign of slowing down anytime soon. Still, our "be ready for anything" recommendation stands until further notice.
