Fishing remains good at the Channel Islands as the holidays approach.

Fishing remains good at the Channel Islands and we are getting boats out fishing every day of the week, but it's definitely slowing down. The amount of anglers coming out to fish are half of what they were this time last month, so there is plenty of elbow room on the boats. Of course we are busiest on the weekends, but even then we are not necessarily selling out.

We are slowly transitioning from mostly surface fishing to mostly bottom fishing.

We are slowly transitioning our fishing style from mostly surface fishing to mostly bottom fishing. Both the inner and outer island boats are catching a few Yellowtail, but the best "game" days are behind us. Looking forward, we see the holiday season quickly approaching and with it, we will be running more and more "freezer filler" trips targeting Rockfish, Lingcod, Sheephead and Whitefish. This is the time of year we catch better than average quality bottom species at all the islands. We are also catching a hand full of big Halibut on our overnight trips.

Fall is in the air and in the water.

It is finally starting to feel like fall as both the water and air temperatures are cooling off a little bit each day. We still have Sardines in our live bait wells, but it is mixed with Anchovy, which is another sign the water is cooling off. Even with the cooler water we are still catching a fair amount of Calico Bass. The boats fishing for bass however, tend to carry anglers who are very skilled at this style of fishing. Small groups on private charters who opt to target Bass as a backup as apposed to going bottom fishing.
