The 2018 Rockfishing Season is Open!

The first couple of weeks of the rockfishing season is open and good! With some of the past week awash with foul weather, the boats made the days they had to work with.

Rockfish and Lingcod Primary target.

As is often the case in the beginning of the season, Rockfish and Lingcod are the primary target. Both the local and outer island trips are catching plenty of Rockfish but the bulk of the Lingcod are coming from the outer island or overnight boats.

Bonus Whitefish bite.

A bonus this year on all trip types, is the amount of Whitefish being caught. Normally, these fish start biting hard during the summer and best during the fall fishing season. Of course, some will be caught during the spring months, but it is unusual to see this many caught, making the recent catches a notable. These tasty, hard fighting critters are an additional bag limit of 10 fish per angler, on top the 10 Rockfish species that can be taken. Max bag limit for an angler is 20 fish in any combination.

WHOPPERS:

1) Alan Pillado from Newbury Park, 17lb Sheephead on Aloha Spirit.

2) Jose Carranza from San Fernando Valley, 5 pound Vermillion Rockfish on Mirage.
